Work 4.0 is currently the most important buzzword in the modern world of work. There are numerous concepts such as home workstations, remote teams or location-flexible flexitime models. A novelty is that professional and private life as well as the boundaries between work, leisure and housing are increasingly merging.

One of the design of such a new work 4.0 is the Brucklyn in Erlangen, which I visited a few days ago. This article is intended to present my impressions and thus the Brucklyn in Erlangen. I was described as a kind of hub for creative young residencials. On the one hand, an innovative residential concept as well as co-working spaces should be included in the concept. In the course of the opening I was invited to Erlangen and I would like to share my impressions of the event in this blog article.

The Brucklyn in Erlangen

The Brucklyn district is located in Erlangen-Bruck and is based on the popular, up-and-coming New York borough of Brooklyn as a pun with its name. In summary, the Brucklyn concept is a quarter of diverse offices, laboratory rooms and coworking spaces with many possibilities for integrated living and working. In the future, many services will be offered that will make life easier: daycare, supermarket, e-bike and e-car stations, car parking spaces and a hotel. Personal leisure activities are also helped by the concept. Examples include adventure gastronomy, events, chill-out areas, gym, lounges and much more. Three of the six buildings are available for rent: the high-rise garage (I wasn’t there), the apartment house The Brucklyn with 300 furnished studios and the Brucklyn Hall with the coworking spaces, event and conference rooms on 2200sqm. In the course of the opening ceremony I was invited to Erlangen and a big and spectacular show was to be expected.

Grand Opening Ceremony in Erlangen

During the opening ceremony, I took a closer look at the new concept of the Brucklyn district. The start was at 4 p.m. with the shuttle from Nuremberg directly to Erlangen. I was very nicely received by the founder and the team. In the first step, we walked through the grounds together. However, I would like to go into this in more detail later. After a guided tour of the grounds, the evening program started to experience the atmosphere in Brucklyn up close. The event was very well organized and fun. After the tour of the building, Alfons Schuhbeck cooked for us in the co-working space. I didn’t take it for myself to exchange some impressions with him.

Afterwards, a so-called mind magician read our thoughts. It was also an exciting show that captivated the audience and me. Afterwards, in addition to a visionary speech by Jürgen Jost, founder and creator of the Brucklyn, singer Sasha   (among others I feel lonely) delivered a great show with band. Due to the exclusive circle of the evening event, all Sasha fans were in the front row. The finale was a motorbike show with fireworks.

But let us return to the actual topic: working, leisure and living closely intertwined in a specially developed quarter. Is this going on and what can it look like? For this purpose, I took a tour of the Brucklyn district and the Brucklyn Hall and looked at the two now opened buildings up close. The Brucklyn Quartier is suitable for living and living and the Brucklyn Hall is a modern co-working space for working.

Living in the Brucklyn District

Life in the Brucklyn district can mean a fusion of private life and professional life. The operators bring work and lifestyle together. The atmosphere at Brucklyn is exciting, international and inspiring. The idea is networking within the district. For example, students from the apartment building The Brucklyn can work directly as working students in the coworking spaces and network with companies. At the same time, everything is done to ensure that the tenants in Brucklyn Hall connect and inspire each other. Later, hotel guests can work in the coworking spaces and move tenants there to the larger offices and laboratory rooms in the buildings that were built.

Working in the Brucklyn Hall Co-Working Spaces

The impressive one in this former production hall was the really great design and you could see many interesting details. In addition to exciting companies, start-ups and start-ups, interesting lectures, free start-up coaching by, for example, lawyers and tax consultants as well as a special Kids Space are planned here. The floors are designed so that open coworking and community spaces alternate with separate office, conference and event rooms, so that you can also work and meet in a concentrated and secluded way.

Community Space in Brucklyn Hall

In the following picture you can see a community area of the Co-Working Space in Brucklyn. Regenerating rooms for breaks were also thought of, such as a table tennis room or a Carrera track. I was definitely thrilled and believe that on the one hand you can work very creatively as well as very productive in this environment. But I can also imagine events very representatively with a welcome on an imposing show stairs and subsequent live cooking and dining together in the Dining Lounge.

I then took a closer look at an apartment in the neighbouring building. You sit comfortably in your room and have a private balcony. If you’re wondering where the bed is, you can easily fold the wall behind the sofa so that a bed with a 1.40 mattress appears. Otherwise there is a writing station, a modern kitchenette and special extras such as fast internet, smart home system, flat screen and a Nespresso coffee machine.

A room at The Brucklyn Erlangen

The operators have set themselves the banner of networking the residents within the building as a vision. There are also some common areas on each of the floors.  There was a music room with library, billiards room, cinema as well as shisha lounge and much more on site. So you should not stay in the room for long, but do something together with the residents in the house. I tried the kitchen and prepared some delicious noodles for the guests.

There are also other common areas   at The Brucklyn: a Pavi Gym, Cooking Lounge, luxury sauna and a cinema. I liked the roof the best. In addition to a great pool and lounge furniture on the airy terrace, there is also a place for soccer and basketball. I don’t think there’s much better place for afterwork. I could also directly imagine that you can also celebrate very good parties here.

As a conclusion, I believe that on the one hand it is very modern and homely in the rooms and on the other hand with the many possibilities of sport, relaxation and networking for every taste and every mood. I am curious to see which of the many rooms are probably the most used. This will definitely become apparent over time.

All my impressions were very exciting and I wish the new quarter every success! This is the first time I have been able to see such a concept up close with the Brucklyn. I will certainly visit Brucklyn again after some time and talk to the operators again. I would also like to thank the Brucklyn team for the great evening event and the great organization! Have a look at the two homepages of The Brucklyn and Brucklyn Hall.

Conclusion: Work 4.0

Work 4.0 is currently the most important buzzword in the modern world of work.   The Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs has already stated in its 2017 White Paper that “Work 4.0 will be more networked, digital and flexible.

What the future world of work will look like in detail remains to be seen. While we in science know the   goal but are still researching it on the way there, others have already implemented a first interpretation of the vision: The Brucklyn in Erlangen of the Jost Group presents impressively how on the one hand working in creative co-working spaces and on the other hand living and living in modern apartments can look like.
