Plagiarism is the fear of many students in the thesis. After various scandals surrounding Gutenberg and other politicians such as Schavan or Steffen, the fear is greater than before. I am writing the article because many students have been asking me about plagiarism in my consultation lately and I felt a real fear.

For the first time to definition: Plagiarism is the presumption of foreign spiritual achievements. This may affect the adoption of foreign texts or other representations (e.g. newspaper articles, magazine articles, photos, films, sound recordings, music), foreign ideas (source: Wikipedia). It applies, among other things, to the taking over of ideas, texts, quotations and images.

Plagiarism is really about deliberately stealing and presenting foreign texts as your own. For example, adopting the definition of Wikipedia without specifying the source is a plagiarism. If I don’t give a source, you could assume that I developed this definition, even though it is copied from Wikipedia.

The versey plagiarism

Many are afraid of accidental plagiarism. I can reassure you: not every sentence is plagiarism. Surely the sentence I have just mentioned was somewhere, but this sentence has no direct information content and is therefore not plagiarism.

Best remedy against plagiarism: transparency and software

I would like to help you against the two most common forms of plagiarism. On the one hand, this is the claw of ideas and the claw of texts without reference to the source.

Text klau: It is important when accepting texts that you always put a source such as Lindner (2018) behind it or use indirect quotes such as: “according to Lindner (2018) agility is very good!”. Collect your sources in software like Citavi or Mendeley, then you never lose track. Remember that it doesn’t apply to every sentence. Only if you explicitly take information from a source.

Idea stealing: The adoption of results, frameworks, recommendations or other research ideas or results applies here. Always specify a source when you adopt a framework or idea of outline or anything. It’s ok to take over the representation of another framework or to take over the outline of another work as long as you mention that you have taken over the outline here. Another topic is if you have obtained the same research results through a clear and comprehensible methodology. I think that thousands of studies on, for example, home office find almost the same thing. It is not plagiarism when it is clear that you have found the results through a comprehensible research design. It always applies: transparency protects!

But I want to be 100% safe!

If you want to be 100% sure, just take a plagiarism test. There is no question that the benefits of a plagiarism test clearly outweigh the benefits. Moreover, the consequences of spiritual theft are very painful. It is therefore definitely worthwhile for you to carry out a plagiarism examination of your thesis before submission.

Conclusion

Sentence by sentence, the thesis grows and the fear of plagiarism grows. “Did I really do everything right?” the hard-working student asks. I can only recommend you to sit back and relax, work cleanly and not be paranoid afraid of plagiarism. Follow my tips and in case of doubt let you take a plagiarism test.
