With the advent of agility and agile methods in companies, more and more new positions have emerged. One of these is described by the professional profile of agile managers (aM). And with the hype surrounding this more modern form of work organization, more and more companies have also been transferred to a project-oriented approach.

The waterfall scheme, precisely timed and planned for many years on the gold scale, had to give way more and more frequently to new approaches such as scrum. This has fundamentally changed the structure of work for employees. From now on, they were assigned to work in sprint teams with completely new job drawings and, in some cases, completely changing task packages. But these changes also require good organization. And that’s where the professional field of agile managers comes in. I would like to explain in the following what exactly its functions and responsibilities are.

Agile Manager – Classification into the organization

In the first place, the aM therefore takes care of a functioning system in companies. This requires a meaningful infrastructure in which teams can work efficiently and performance-oriented. Within the framework of agility, the aM is therefore responsible for setting up exactly such an organization in companies.

One can imagine the professional field of agile managers like that of a gardener (cf. Example 1)

As the leader and responsible person for the smooth workflow in the teams, roles, responsibilities, and resources and resources must be distributed wisely. You can imagine the respective working groups as plants. These must be nurtured and maintained in order to flower or to yield a yield. Means used by the gardener, such as water, fertilizer or the control of temperature and luminous intensity, correspond to, for example, the management of tasks or the setting up of chat systems in the sense of the aM.

Agile Manager – Range of tasks

However, this describes only a small part of the range of tasks of agile managers. This is because this profession involves many more tasks, such as

  • the corporate strategy
  • the company’s statics and
  • the company’s operations

Tasks in the area of corporate strategy

With regard to corporate strategy, aM is particularly concerned with selecting the right business model for the market and linking it to the appropriate value offerings. At the same time, the agile manager must also take into account the associated market, competition and risk factors and put them in relation to each other.

Tasks in the field of corporate statics

In the field of corporate statics, the agile manager has to integrate the right organizational structure into the company based on the products produced or sold. This means that he has to take care of a flawless and efficient cooperation of the respective product owners. In the context of this, it is also important for him to make the right decisions regarding guidelines and working requirements.

Tasks in the field of business operations

But also the company as a whole system is under the watchful eyes of agile managers. This is primarily where tasks arise in the area of human resources management, cross-company cooperation, and the provision and proper application of tools and techniques for the development teams. In addition to selecting the right work and aids for the workforce, the aM must also take care of employee qualification, further training and the accompanying working environment at the workplace. In addition, it is important for him to maintain contact with operational partners and to continuously optimize the cooperation.
