The world of work is becoming digital and changing! But what significance will human work performance still have in the future? Does knowledge work abolish the work of knowledge? the FAZ asks itself in an article. BPB also notes the following: Are we witnessing a digital revolution that will soon upset our world of work? We cannot say with certainty what our working world of tomorrow will look like, but the change is there. Whether this change is good or bad, no one can say at the moment. The world sums up the negative consequences: Digitisation forces many people to work faster and brings them to the brink of exhaustion. Concern about the job is also growing. Paradoxically, most people still like the change. There are also many positive things to be said by thinkers: local and temporal flexibility is generally a relief for workers: commuters can, for example, also do their work on trains or on planes, and private appointments can be more easily integrated into the working day.

But how far has this change actually come and how does it show itself? To get to the stand on the topic: digital work, I was with another research colleague at 24 companies between 20 and 50 employees in different industries and we took a look at digitalization there. I shall summarise the results briefly here.

Overall, it turned out that PC’s are basically everywhere. However, the use of tablets, smartphones and laptops has increased massively. As a result, companies are promising more mobile work and more flexibility.

It also showed that IN almost all companies ERP systems are being considered and more software for support. For example, the quotation creation is replaced by a tool. However, only partial digitization is currently apparent. Thus, the creation of the offer is made by the tool, but for the administration these are still printed out and stapled.

Fields of digitization

The companies surveyed identified the main goals of digitalization as the support of employees through automation. Greater flexibility is also to be achieved through cloud systems and customer loyalty is to be increased by CRM systems. New potentials and an increase in sales were also mentioned.

At the moment, companies are still waiting for the digital transformation, many magazines say. The reasons for this were mostly legal uncertainties, a lack of know-how, complexity and high investment costs.

Conclusion: The digital world of work is coming!

The results of the survey clearly show that mobile technologies such as laptops and smartphones are not only already part of everyday life in companies, but that the tools are to become even more mobile. There is a desire to connect employees even more using technology and move processes to the cloud to make work more accessible and faster. CRM, document management and ERP systems are also standard in many of the companies surveyed. Only in places are costs, complexity, a lack of know-how and legal uncertainty that have yet to be overcome.
