The Corona virus keeps the world under shock and businesses in the home office. Currently, 25% of German employees are in the home office and 100% work in virtual teams.

According to a survey of 1,000 employees of the Federal Association of Digital Economy (2020), more than 45% of companies are unwilling to offer home office and “only” 58% of employees explicitly want home office from their employer.

You will notice that the majority of companies either do not have sufficient IT or meaningful digital processes to collaborate. Both may also be true. This is exactly what you need to see as an opportunity.

Managers take up the topic and design processes

In my opinion, a good team leader or manager must be able to ensure that work is done in addition to his day-to-day business. He takes himself as thematic areas and defines processes. Now comes the operational team management: to control compliance with the processes.

Now you can certainly add one + one: Virtual teamwork in companies opens up potentials for new topics and processes for digital collaboration. But who is shaping these processes? Often established team leaders are rather sluggish and lack knowledge about digital collaboration.

Important: Many people like to talk about introducing software like Jira or trying to convert sprints into scrum. However, these persons will not receive any transport. It’s about you being the one who gets the first sprint. Having the idea is not a performance (that’s what consultants do). It’s about perseverance and consistency in getting employees to work according to this process. This can take up to a year, but you’ll notice: it’s worth it! Because this is the true achievement of a leader!

Specifically,you must be the one to bring employees to meetings, send invitations, log meetings, and also monitor tools daily, and painstakingly fill out missing fields and stati in Jira or Microsoft Teams. Especially at the beginning, you have to do a lot yourself and at some point after 3 months you also have to make sure that the other employees enter this yourself.

Designing digital processes and becoming team leaders

Now my suggestion would be that you take a team and establish processes for digital collaboration there. This includes specifying on the one hand: how is which tool used and when?. You should document this cleanly and train the employees.

Now you should also make sure that everyone comes to the meetings regularly and that the tools are neatly maintained. You can read how and which meetings they are here: Meeting formats for virtual teams.

Read the topic carefully and take control of the team using virtual tools and also manage the tools to get started. Create boards for tasks and show your management the new possibilities. From my own experience, I can say that at the beginning you have to beat everyone into the meeting and create and maintain the majority of the tasks yourself. Show the employees regularly what you have done and motivate you to participate.


You realize that you can also take a team lead easily. Don’t wait until you become a team leader, but start being a team leader. Design processes and coordinate them with management. Show documentation and click instructions. Monitor attendance at meetings and keep the tools clean (maintaining the fields and inputs).
