Every major project starts with the first step as well as your work with a good introduction. This should take the reader with him and provide an overview of the thesis. An introduction is not only good for the reader, but also for your caregiver. The introduction can serve as an expose to make a topic palatable to the caregiver. According to the Duden, an expose is a written and explanatory copy of a fact. An introduction or an expose consists of the following building blocks:
- Introduction to the topic
- Motivation on the topic
- Definition and explanation
- Up-to-date figures and references to the topic
- Existing knowledge on the subject
- Criticism and research gap
- Work and expected results

Introduction to the topic
With the first sentence, you pick up the reader. Imagine that the reader has just cleaned his apartment and is now reading your work. So he’s mentally on a different subject. This first sentence is therefore very important.
Example 1: Agility is on everyone’s mouth as a way of working in companies and it is important to work in a sustainable way.
Example 2: The so-called digitalization is a mega-trend of the current business world and is taken into account by almost all companies in strategy development.
Motivation on the topic
Now it is important to show the reader that your subject is also important for our world. List the potentials of the topic and motivate the reader to deal with the topic.
Example:Bachelor’s thesis on chatbots: There are many cases where bots can support companies. With chatbots, it’s possible to collect data faster than anyone or to answer questions from large databases. They are available 24/7 and provide unlimited customer support.
Definition and explanation
In this section, you explain important terms that are necessary for your work. It is enough if you define them only briefly in one sentence, so that the reader can know what you are talking about. For example, when you work on agility in organizations, you would briefly define both terms.
Example: An organization describes the functionality of an institution or similar serving [planmäßige] composition, structure and texture (Gabler lexicon).
Up-to-date figures and references to the topic
Now you show that your topic is also up-to-date and important. Check out current media or Google: Are there current events or statistics on your topic?
Example 1: Bachelor’s thesis on car sharing: The topic of car sharing is currently of great importance. Volkswagen, for example, recently launched its own service in Berlin with WeShare.
Example 2: Bachelor’s thesis on the Scrum Master: The profession of Scrum Master is becoming more and more important in Germany. Every year, the Scrum Alliance develops 60,000 to 100,000 new Scrum Masters, and the Scrum.org awarded a total of more than 245,000 Scrum Master certifications this year.
Existing knowledge on the subject
Now it is important to show the reader briefly and concisely the current state of knowledge from science. They prove that their subject is relevant and that other authors also deal with it. To do this, look for current studies and explain them in 2-3 sentences. I recommend mentioning 3-5 studies. For more information, see my article on literature analysis.
Example:There are already numerous studies on the digitisation of SMEs. For example, Lindner (2019) has already shown through five group discussions that SMEs tend to digitise rather wait-and-see and step-by-step. Bley and Leyh (2016) also surveyed 2,300 SMEs from the Dresden region and concluded that the focus is on internal standard processes such as accounting.
Criticism and research gap
Now it is time to show what you would like to explore. What have the other authors forgotten or ignored? How exactly you proceeded in another article: Find topic for thethesis. I also recommend that the research question be formulated in this paragraph.
Example 1: All of the authors mentioned have focused on the introduction of agile methods independently of the industry. It cannot therefore be assumed that all recommendations are also valid for the banking industry. I would like to fill this gap with this work and devote myself to the following research question: What recommendations can be made about agility to banks?
Important: Many of you confuse the reader in this paragraph with a different research question about the title. Titles and research questions should be the same. I give two examples:
- Agility in banks – an empirical study — What recommendations for action regarding agility can be given to banks?
- Digitization of management consulting – a case study — What can digitalization look like using the example of a management consultancy?
You notice that titles and research questions are the same. In the second example, it is even noted that the case study refers to advice and that in the first example general tips are given for all banks.
Procedure and result
Now explain the procedure and the result that the reader can expect. This will help the reader understand what to expect and what you are taking. Don’t forget to highlight the benefit of your results. I also like to share the benefits and show what scientists (input for further research) and practitioners (recommendations for action) have of them.
Example procedure: In this work, the current state of knowledge is summarized by means of a literature analysis and evaluated with experts for relevance through interviews.
Example result: The result of the work are recommendations for action on the implementation of agile methods in the company. The recommendations can be used to make working with agile methods more efficient.
An introduction is the most important part of a work and the reader decides whether he really wants to read the work or not. There is therefore a need to invest a little more time in them. The length of an introduction is often 2-3 pages.
