Abstract

The current trend of “digitalization” generally refers to profound changes due to the acquisition and use of modern technology, which affect the state, society and companies (Reis et al. 2018). The current impact of digitalization is a complex and complex topic.

The aim of this work is to better understand the current impact of the digitisation of enterprises, especially on SMEs with a focus on knowledge-intensive services. According to the Institute for SME Research (2018a), SMEs are generally understood as companies with fewer than 250 employees and more than €50 million in turnover. Knowledge-intensive services are generally problem-solving mental activities.

In order to investigate the impact in a targeted manner, current and selected literature is discussed with experts from SMEs with a focus on knowledge-intensive services and selected aspects are examined in four detailed studies. The aspects are the impact of digitalisation on agility, work, leadership and workplace IT in SMEs with a focus on knowledge-intensive services.

The detailed studies derive key statements on the impact of digitalisation and discuss them with experts from SMEs with a focus on knowledge-intensive services. The results serve as recommendations for practitioners and as possible starting points for further research.
