Many students would like to derive recommendations for action or a framework for companies in their thesis. This is fundamentally a good idea, but it is often difficult, and such frameworks or recommendations should not simply be devised indiscriminately. To derive these sensibly, there is the method of reference modelling, which is a constructive type of research.

Reading tip: How do I classify my research scientifically?

What is reference modeling

Reference modeling techniques are used to create simplified images of reality. Based on observations (inductive) or derived from theories (deductive), these models are designed to represent a planned or optimized system environment.” (Bodendorf et al. 2012)

In other words, you can use reference modeling to derive general recommendations for action from a theory. To do this, there are defined steps that you should follow strictly. I give examples of this at the end of the article.

  • Problem: What is the problem?
  • What: Construction of the model frame (what are the frame conditions)
  • How: How to solve the problem (recommendations for action)
  • Reference model: Visualization of the model (graphic, checklist)

Limitation and benefits of reference modeling

As already from Bodendorf et al. (2012), the limitation is as follows: Reference models do not themselves contribute to knowledge of facts or their explanation. They are intended only to cover a wide range of possible situations and “serve as ready-made solution schemes or general recipes for certain classes of decision-making problems to address practical problems”. You therefore make a recommendation or presentation of the situation and do not always have to be valid in other companies and are therefore more likely to be considered valid for a specific individual case, such as in your thesis. You should limit this.

At the same time, this is also the great advantage, because you will never be able to derive concrete recommendations that are valid in all companies and their work is therefore vulnerable. After all, every second company will tell you: ‘So it is not feasible for us because of the internal guidelines’.

Tip: Don’t forget to limit your methodology cleanly.

Application of reference modelling

So if you want to form a framework or recommendationfor action, describe the problem first. For example, how can an executive efficiently lead employees at other locations. Now you define the framework conditions such as: He is allowed to travel once a month and has email, video tool and phone to communicate with employees.

You then show the recommendations for action. For example, it can delegate tasks, trust employees, and so on. At the end, you visualize this in a checklist or a great graphic. Don’t forget to limit them afterwards. For example, he could travel more often or buy new tools to improve his leadership. Other companies may also have different policies, so some of your recommendations cannot be implemented. Their recommendations therefore apply only to the framework conditions described.
