“You are a very good employee and very valuable to the company. However, you will need to be in the company for a few more years to be transported. We will discuss this in the next annual meeting.”

… the boss spoke – and the required promotion or salary increase was a long time coming. I would like to give some tips on how to pressure executives to act.

Consequences of a lack of action by executives

The lack of a pay rise is the most common reason (34 percent) for dismissal, according to a survey of 1,000 workers. According to the study, only one in five respondents received an increase, and the situation is hardly different for promotions. Only 16 percent were promoted internally before termination.

The result of a lack of executive actions is numerous redundancies and thus a loss of skilled workers.

Rational and emotional insights

I would like to directly limit that my tips in this article will only help if you are already doing a very good job and the manager would already be promoting you for rational reasons or want ingesrating you but does not.

Reading tip: Become a senior

This state of affairs is called rational insight. They meet all criteria (internal guidelines) and do a good job. The following illustration shows the two types of insight.

Rational and emotional insight are important for a decision

Rational insight is without consequences

You know this: we eat fast food, like to sit at the PC on weekends or treat ourselves to a shisha. All these things are harmful and we are rationally aware of this, but we do it anyway because we don’t see it emotionally.

But why do many people still exercise or eat consciously? This is done out of emotional insight, which is often based on two factors:

  • Pressure of suffering
  • Positive perspective (hope)

So you have to see a pressure of suffering and a positive perspective when making an emotional decision. Now two questions arise:

  • Is a job vacant for a long time or a team without leadership because you are not promoted (suffering pressure)?
  • Can you directly support your manager as a team leader and improve his department (positive perspective)?
  • In a slightly modified form, you should also make it clear what your suffering pressure is in terms of salary and what a positive perspective there is.

It is now up to you to awaken these factors to your manager. But how can this be achieved?

Reading tip: Become a leader

Find the positive perspective!

One thing is clear: it is not enough to build up suffering pressure. They should also present themselves as a credible positive perspective. I’ll give you a few selected examples in the following table.

I have deliberately refrained from saying that the threat of dismissal in some organisations often seems to be a means of promotion. However, I am not in favour of this.

Means and examples of suffering and positive perspectives

Conclusion: From consciousness to action

As important as the awakening of the pressure of suffering is and the subsequent illustrating the positive perspective, you also have to ask again and again whether your manager has already come into action.

My tip is also to do my own research. First, find out how promotions or salary increases are carried out. I often experience three types:

  • Promotions or salaries are carried out irregularly: often in small and medium-sized enterprises due to growth or certain events.
  • The boss has room for free: the boss is free to decide or to set a generous framework.
  • Promotions/salary follow a fixed scheme: there are fixed plans and programs that you have to complete (e.g. corporations)

Now you accompany the manager in the process (ask for partial additions e.g. application already submitted to HR etc.) and stick to it stubbornly!
