Our body switches to such a tunnel view in 2 situations. On the one hand, as soon as the body closes itself off from further influences and stimuli during stress in order to protect itself and on the other hand, after some time in a project, one does not see the forest for the trees. The view is just going out.
Problem: The tunneview with managers
You know this: you suggest a tip to managers, but they don’t listen to it. The head of the department, who has been in the department for many years, has been in danger of being in the tunnel view for many years.
The greatest danger is avoidable errors. This is encouraged by the fact that perception is limited and public solutions are barely seen. Also problematic is the foreclosure by the tunnel view – the foreclosure of new solutions such as scrum or new tools. It is based on the status quo and tried and tested solutions. The defined objective is adhered to in all circumstances, although it may no longer make sense.
In the course of my doctoral thesis, my experts who worked with me recommended to me that you should change your job or team management after 5 years, because you are too strong in the tunnel view. A new boss always brings fresh ideas. Many corporations also change managers after 5 years.
Tips against the tunnel view
The first step should be to combat the causes: get out of stress and everyday life. Look at the situation from a new perspective and, above all, incorporate feedback from employees. Let your best employees simply work out suggestions and give you freedom that they can be implemented.
