A discussion is a discussion on a particular topic. It examines a specific subject and is an important part of scientific work. In the thesis, the discussion critically examines the issues considered before and interprets them. Wikipedia says: The author puts himself into the opinions of possible debaters and links them to a coherent view.

As a rule, you present results and research methods in a neutral way and show what you have found without commenting on this. For example, you list the content of literature or statements from interviews you have made.

Now it is necessary to discuss these results and show the reader what can be hidden behind the data and which statements of current literature are the same which contradict and which limits there may be.

Example:You walk in a room with 5 people and 2 pictures. They describe in the results what these people look like, what they do and what images are in the room. In the following, you discuss what connection people might have, what the images could mean, and much more.

Discussion of research design

What is often and gladly forgotten is a discussion of research design. Students often use literature analysis and expert interviews because it fits. But why did you choose these methods and what distinguishes them from other methods and what might have come out of another research design?

Reading tip: Limiting research methods

You should know exactly the advantages and disadvantages of research methods (see reading tip). First, discuss why you used the research methods and show the benefits. For example, qualitative research is better suited to exploratory situations and quantitative rather to standardizable situations. Surveys in particular are well suited to capture a large number in order to achieve a higher generality in order to help interviews to explore rather unknown fields with open questions. You may also find similar studies that have used a similar approach. What did you do differently and what was better?

Remember that you should justify the methods well. To do this, you need to learn the methods in a meaningful way beforehand and deal with them. I have written an article on the blog about almost every methodology. Surely they can give an initial orientation.

Discussion of the results

In this part, you will discuss the results. Are there possible correlations of the results, which are new, which are already mentioned in the existing literature and many more questions. Possible limitations and approaches for further research are also part of the discussion. The important thing is to interpret the results and, above all, to clearly present surprising facts. For example, it is not uncommon for companies to have significantly more technology than they did a few years ago, but it would be surprising if, for example, companies that the budgets should no longer exist. Also limit the results of similar studies. Do you have similar results or do they differ?

This part is particularly difficult because, unlike the research methods (clear advantages and disadvantages), you can only orientate yourself, if at all, on possible similar studies. So you need to fully understand your results and write down and discuss critical questions. This requires a high level of self-performance and hardly anyone can help you with it.

Conclusion

In my view, the discussion is one of the most difficult parts of a thesis. It distinguishes very good from good work and shows how much you understood the subject. While the collection of data, for example, is followed by a rigorous approach, you have to think hard in the discussion and illuminate and discuss the data from all aspects. Take sufficient time and write down critical questions before discussing them and try to discuss them.

A high-quality discussion is a key driver of science!
