DevOps has been gaining in importance in the IT sector for some time now. But what is actually behind the term and what is the aim of the concept? We will get to the bottom of these and other questions.

What is DevOps?

The term DevOps is a composition of the English words “development” and “operation”. The IT concept deals with practices for automating processes between software development and IT. The goal is to accelerate the development of software solutions and then test and release them faster. In order to combine the strengths of software developers and IT teams, the concept sets out to link the areas more closely. More integration and new perspectives instead of isolated work. DevOps uses techniques such as Agile or Continuous Delivery. The aim is to gain added value for the company and its customers through efficiency and innovation.

How DevOps was based

After years of inefficient collaboration between software development and IT teams, the DevOps movement was created in 2007/2008. The main idea of the protest was to create more transparency between the individual areas of work within the development and marketing of IT solutions. Not only was the often spatial separation of teams from the fields of development and operations criticized, but also the goals were often not clearly named and in some cases even rivalled. But the fact that different KPIs (key performance indicators) were used for assessment also sparked dissatisfaction among many.

Ten years ago, it was decided to change the concept first at small local meetings or via online exchange. Both sides came into contact with the result that DevOps has become an important topic in many companies.

benefits of DevOps

DevOps is best known among experts to strengthen the trust base of teams and thus achieve better task management. Significant bugs are often fixed faster, allowing software to release faster. The benefits of DevOps therefore apply to a wide range of areas of corporate organization:

Strengthened corporate culture

The corporate culture reflects the central point of the DevOps concept. The aim is to achieve thinking in systems through feedback, transparency and integration of the teams. With the help of a holistic view, the individual areas can better coordinate their goals and estimate the mutual influence more efficiently.

Smarter working

But it’s not just the speed of work that DevOps significantly increases. Experience shows that the quality of developments is also significantly increasing in value.

Automated processes and tools based on standard concepts significantly increase the productivity of each area. As a result, teams often respond more quickly to problems and get more frequent releases. The reduced isolation of the teams also reduces operating costs

Faster fixes

Another advantage of DevOps is certainly the reduced downtime. Faster feedback cycles can help solve problems faster and help teams work together better. Open communication reduces the pressure on the individual, so that there are fewer obstacles to the releases. This can also increase customer satisfaction in the long term.

Improved management

DevOps also provides for processes to be clearly structured and, above all, prioritized. As a result, even unexpected tasks can be solved in a timely manner without losing productivity.

Precisely because the teams are increasingly working hand in hand, additional tasks do not have to be complicated across departments. Instead, the tasks can be split among themselves. Thanks to greater transparency, it is not only easier to see the unexpected in advance, but also to react more efficiently.
