Entrepreneurs and decision-makers on their way to the world of cloud technologies are hoping above all to increase sales and easily scale their IT. Although risks in the area of data protection as well as generally high costs can be incurred, experts count the cloud among the TOP 5 IT trends. They also predict extraordinary growth for cloud providers. And a study by Bitkom (Cloud Monitor 2019) also shows that of the more than 500 companies surveyed, more than 70% already use cloud technologies.

For the other sub-area that is still on its way there, this article is intended to provide an introduction to the topic.

Guide to the world of cloud technologies

Entrepreneurs and beginners in the field of cloud technologies should first make the decision about the right service model. They should choose between IaaS, PaaS and SaaS in terms of requirements.

Overview of service models

The IaaS service model describes the least complex variant and describes a virtual data center with computing power, storage, and networks. Infrastracture as a Service scores above all with a high degree of flexibility as well as a simple migration of existing applications that run on virtual machines.

The next level of service models is represented by PaaS. Platform as a Service is particularly popular with software developers, as it allows them to develop and run their own programs faster using interfaces on the offered infrastructure. It is also easily scalable.

The most complex form of service models is described by SaaS. Software as a Service is already comparable to a business model. In doing so, the functions of a software are made available to the customers for a fee.

Overview of delivery models

The next step is to select the appropriate delivery model. So that option that describes whether it should be a private or a public cloud.

As the name suggests, the public cloud describes a provider’s offer to a cloud that is publicly accessible over the Internet with all its services. It is true that many companies are afraid of data protection problems. On the other hand, this cloud technology offers the advantage that you can do without the purchase of your own hardware and software and the management of IT. These necessary tasks are taken over here by the provider.

Entrepreneurs and decision-makers, however, who are too serious about the risk of data breaches, can also choose to use a private cloud. In doing so, the management and accessibility of IT services are regulated within the company. Finally, maintenance- and installation-free IT applications as well as a scalable IT infrastructure can be accessed via the web browser.

However, it is often also in the interest of entrepreneurs and decision-makers to combine the advantages of both variants. For this reason, a third form, the Hybrid Cloud, has now emerged.

The Hybrid Cloud

The Hybrid Cloud merges the most important characteristics of public and private cloud. For example, the hybrid form of cloud technologies enables applications that are subject to privacy criteria to be kept in-house. At the same time, less stringently protected applications can be publicly managed on the Internet by external service providers.

However, the hybrid cloud also has some obstacles. In particular, the strict separation of data is often a difficult undertaking. A structured and consistent division of critical and uncritical company data, business processes and workflows is required in order to build the system efficiently.

Starting with the cloud is often difficult. This is partly due to the high complexity and, on the other hand, to the partly still represented unknownness of cloud solutions. However, it is clear that cloud technologies are indispensable in the field of agile and modern work. For example, virtual teams can be much better controlled to collaborate with global customers.
