Kubernetes is currently on everyone’s mouth. But many IT departments struggle to come up with their own concept. Instead, we are increasingly using prefabricated cloud applications. But what exactly is Kubernetes and what benefits does it offer? This article is intended to provide answers to those and other questions.

What is Kubernetes?

As a Google project from 2014, Kubernetes was made available as an open source project after more than 15 years of research. The portable and infinitely expandable platform is used to manage containerized workloads and services. Not only can they be better set up and operated, but they can also be scaled much more easily. This greatly simplifies not only automation, but also configurations.

This is why Kubernetes is so trendy, because the project can still be used to replace manually controlled servers with an automated version. Kubernetes not only regulates the sequence of productions, but also provides the right rhythm. In technical jargon, such an activity is called orchestration.

Kubernetes in comparison

Compared to traditional orchestration systems, however, Kubernetes takes a modified approach. Instead of orienting itself to a defined workflow, the platform consists of independent control processes. Their task is to monitor the status quo of the container system. At the same time, however, it is also in the process of constantly optimizing it in the direction of the desired version. Accordingly, Kubernetes is not bound by a fixed solution to a task, but regulates the responsibilities themselves. This has the considerable advantage that no further control body is needed. In addition, this can greatly simplify the process of managing containerized workloads and services.

What Kubernetes can do

In summary, this results in the following services that Kubernetes can provide to control and control container applications.

  • Automation of containerized workloads and services

Container images and their configuration can be automatically aggregated using Kubernetes while being continuously monitored by the open source project. This creates a kind of assembly line that ensures that the specified number of containers is in a constant flow. Due to the availability of a so-called rollout, you can also make changes at any time by pausing or undoing the process and then getting it back on track.

  • Conservation and optimized use of IT resources

By recognizing free resources and automatically embedding containers of a deployment in exactly these places, Kubernetes ensures a conservation of resources. In addition, you can optimize the usage by setting the minimum and maximum use of resources in advance as a user.

  • Automatic scaling

Constantly changing intensities of tasks are no problem for Kubernetes, as the open source platform automatically digs through open resources and automatically scales the container usage. As a user, all you need to do is ensure that the project has sufficient resources to operate properly.

  • Opportunities for Persistent Storage

Kubernetes does not generally establish references between tasks, which is why the containers are stateless. However, in order to be able to store data permanently, the platform provides persistent storage in the form of interfaces to services such as the Google Cloud Platform or Amazon’s EBS.

Conclusion

In terms of his role as an orchestration system, Kubernetes acts like the conductor of an orchestra, who guides his musicians and manages and supervises their activities – just transferred to IT-based applications. Complex software projects can be automated and monitored, saving resources and time limits, which in turn is a significant advantage for many projects.

However, Kubernetes, like almost every IT-based system, requires a certain period of acclimatization time before the user can fully engage with the platform at full level and scope of performance. This usually requires experienced programmers who support new users in familiarising them and familiarise them with the new trend.
