Agile methods of software development have quickly become the best-practice solution of modern companies. Software companies in particular achieve faster and more customer-oriented results with the agile way of working. However, this way of working requires an agile environment and customers of these companies often still work in the sequential waterfall model. Both models are contradictory and therefore often lead to wrong decisions, budget overruns and massive change management in combination. Existing solutions are often not empirically proven, to be understood only as frameworks or not tailored to this particular context. In the course of this work, a concept is developed that coordinates both methods as a hybrid process in order to avoid wrong decisions and budget overruns as well as to reduce change management. This concept is based on current literature and has been evaluated with IT experts. It is also tested and evaluated in an IT service provider as a case study.

The master’s thesis behind the white paper was awarded the German Study Prize of the GPM for the best master’s thesis 2016 on the topic of project management. Below you will find the participant brochure and the certificate.
Agile in the Waterfallworld
The white paper was born out of my master’s thesis, which I wrote in 2015. The white paper summarises the results of the master’s thesis. SCRUM and Kanban, for example, have been established as a successful model in software development for several years. However, incorrect synchronization with other methods often results in crucial change management, unclear roles and tasks, a significant loss of collaboration throughout the project, errors in project estimation, and lack of response to changes. Based on specific bestpractices, this white paper is intended to provide a model for successfully establishing agile methods in waterfall-typical organizations without changing the positive properties of existing structures. By interlocking coordination throughout the entire project, the massive change requests and errors are significantly reduced.
